It is an academic system where students are not assigned a major upon admission but instead go through a major exploration period before deciding on their field of study. In 2025, Sangmyung University introduced a new Free Major admission system. This initiative aims to expand students' academic choices through a student-centered and flexible academic system, and to foster interdisciplinary talents suited for the future society. In addition, the students in the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies are supported through a highly flexible, student-centered major transfer system, aimed at helping them make clear choices about their major and career path. Sangmyung University provides opportunities for students to explore and choose a variety of majors through the establishment of a free major. Students are supported to select a wide range of careers through their major search and liberal arts education. Sangmyung University is preparing various support measures to solve the career concerns of fresh students. For example, through the 'SM JOB SMS' event, we operate career exploration programs for freshmen and parents and are conducting career and employment counseling around the University Job Plus Center. Characteristics and Advantages Students in the Free Major can choose their desired major anytime from the second semester of their first year to the second semester of their third year. They are also given the opportunity to gain comprehensive experience across major courses, liberal arts, and extracurricular programs. By exploring and selecting a major on their own, students can develop self-directed learning skills. They can also design a career path that aligns with their interests and aptitudes. By integrating knowledge from various fields, they are able to grow into creative and practical problem-solvers. Support Programs Sangmyung University has provided various support programs for students in the Free Major program, including admission information sessions, campus tours, and the “Sangmyung Fresh” orientation. After the semester begins, students have opportunities to explore different fields through online major exploration content tailored to each department and through the university’s signature liberal arts courses. In addition, there is a mentorship program that connects students with seniors from various fields, allowing them to gain insights and guidance. The university also offers the JA Coupling System, in which each student is supported by at least two JA professors who provide academic consulting and counseling. During the fifth week of the semester, a Major Exploration Festival is held, bringing together current students, companies, local organizations, and alumni. Furthermore, thematic exploration seminars are also available to deepen students’ academic interests. Sangmyung University’s Free Major system represents a forward-looking approach to higher education—one that prioritizes student autonomy, interdisciplinary learning, and career adaptability. By offering a flexible academic structure and comprehensive support, the university empowers students to discover their own paths and cultivate the skills needed for an ever-evolving future. The exhibition took place at the Urbanpluto Gallery in Seonyudo, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. This project, organized by TEAM BORI, focused on portraits and visually highlighted individual identity and social personas through the keyword “preference.” Personal Tastes in Everyday Life The exhibition Persona: Damda focuses on the individual tastes of each subject through portrait photography. The clothing, surrounding objects, spaces, and atmospheres of people of various ages and genders reflect their unique personalities and identities. Visitors interpret these tastes through the portraits, experiencing a process of exploring each person’s “character,” or persona. Additionally, symbolic elements representing these tastes were recreated as tangible objects, allowing viewers to engage with them visually and tactilely. Interaction with the Audience One of the exhibition’s key features is its invitation to self-reflection. By observing the preferences of others, visitors are prompted to reflect on themselves. Questions such as “What are my tastes?” or “What is my persona?” arise naturally. This creates an opportunity for self-discovery through art. Student Interview An interview was conducted with TEAM BORI, the organizers of the exhibition. Jo Hye-won (Culture and Arts Management, Class of ’22) shared, “Through the keywords ‘meeting at the boundary’ and ‘in the name of change,’ we wanted to reframe the differences in personal tastes as points of connection rather than division. We hoped to show how individual preferences can connect with others, expand, and lead to new forms of transformation.” In this way, Persona: Damda is more than just a collection of portraits — it is a thoughtful exhibition that explores identity and social connection through the theme of personal taste. Persona: Damda was more than just an exhibition — it was a culmination of four years of learning and growth for the students of the Department of Culture and Arts Management. TEAM BORI took charge of every aspect of the project, from exhibition planning and photography to spatial design and visitor flow, demonstrating their practical capabilities in cultural and artistic planning. This exhibition offered viewers a new perspective through the lens of others’ tastes, while providing the student curators with valuable, hands-on experience in field-based cultural and arts management. With an annual budget of approximately 3 billion, the initiative aims to establish a sustainable academic ecosystem that can effectively respond to evolving societal structures. The project focuses on fostering innovative education by integrating specialized curricula, enhancing educational infrastructure, and reforming academic policies. In an era of rapid societal transformation, students require more than conventional academic training; they need structured guidance to explore career trajectories that align with both their competencies and the evolving job market. HUSS was established to address this need by equipping students with the critical thinking and adaptive skills necessary for future success. It not only provides an advanced learning environment but also encourages students to contemplate their roles in shaping society. Despite its significance, many students remain unaware of HUSS, and those who have heard of it often find its course registration system unfamiliar, as it differs from standard university enrollment processes. 그림2 Educational Objectives of the University and Consortium Vision Addressing Societal Challenges Through Interdisciplinary Education 1. Social Polarization and the Erosion of Community Bonds The rise of income inequality, generational and gender conflicts, and the complexities of a multicultural society have contributed to the weakening of social cohesion. Moreover, the proliferation of online and offline conflicts has exacerbated societal divisions. Through HUSS, students will analyze the differentiated impacts of structural changes on various social groups while fostering reflective citizenship and leadership that prioritizes unity and collaboration. 2. Aging Population and Welfare System Crisis South Korea’s rapidly aging demographic presents significant economic and social challenges. By 2025, over 20% of the population will be aged 65 or older, increasing to 30% by 2036 and exceeding 40% by 2050. With the National Pension System projected to face a fiscal deficit by 2041 and depletion by 2053, there is an urgent need for experts in welfare policy, labor market dynamics, and employment restructuring. HUSS aims to develop future policymakers and analysts capable of navigating these demographic shifts. 3. Media Ethics and Public Interest in the Digital Age A 2021 survey by the National Human Rights Commission revealed that 60% of respondents had encountered hate speech online, while 90% believed it intensified societal conflicts and crime. Furthermore, 80% expressed concerns over restricted freedom of expression for marginalized groups. As new media platforms continue to redefine communication, HUSS prepares students to become ethical media professionals and critical consumers, ensuring digital platforms serve the public good rather than exacerbating division. 4. Hyper-Personalization and the Decline of Social Well-Being According to the 2023 UN World Happiness Report, South Korea ranked 32nd among 38 OECD nations in terms of happiness, with the country also having the fourth-highest rate of social isolation. As modern society becomes increasingly individualized, HUSS promotes holistic education that fosters personal fulfillment while strengthening community engagement, enabling students to contribute to social cohesion and collective well-being. Innovative Learning Model and Flexible Course Structure HUSS introduces a highly flexible and accessible educational framework that accommodates students’ diverse learning needs. 100% Asynchronous Learning that all courses are delivered through recorded lectures, allowing students to study at their own pace. Unlike conventional university courses that rely on relative grading, HUSS implements an absolute grading scale to promote fair and individualized assessment. The initiative offers a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary courses, including: Politics Through Games (Analyzing political systems and strategies through gamification), Understanding Safety Management (Exploring risk assessment and crisis response strategies), Healing Through Travel(Examining the psychological and emotional benefits of travel). Unique Registration Process and Academic Considerations Registering for HUSS courses follows a different process from standard university course enrollment. Instead of using their institution’s regular system, students must sign up through the HUSS Portal. Access requires prior verification of their enrollment status as a registered student. Once verified, students can log in and complete their course registration within the portal. If any issues arise during verification, they can seek assistance from the HUSS administrative team. Beyond the registration process, the academic schedule of HUSS courses also presents challenges. Unlike regular university courses, HUSS exams do not align with the standard academic calendar. This can lead to scheduling conflicts for students. "It was difficult to manage my exam schedule because HUSS operates on a different timeline than my university," said Kang Myung-kwan, a Sports Management major who has taken HUSS courses. Given these differences, students enrolling in HUSS are encouraged to plan their academic schedules carefully. In today’s rapidly evolving society, universities must go beyond their traditional role as educational institutions and actively respond to social changes. These events provided new students with essential information about their academic journey and helped them adapt to university life. Process of the Entrance Ceremony The entrance ceremony took place on February 27, 2025 (Thursday) at 10:00 AM at the Grand Auditorium in the Cultural Arts Hall on the Seoul campus. Freshmen were required to arrive by 9:50 AM to ensure a smooth start to the event. The ceremony marked the beginning of their academic journey, with key university officials welcoming the new students and offering guidance for their studies. Parents and guardians were not permitted inside the auditorium during the ceremony; instead, they were accommodated in a separate waiting area at Daeshin Hall. Following the entrance ceremony, the freshman orientation commenced, running from 10:40 AM to 6:00 PM on the same day. The event included welcoming speeches, campus guidance, and an introduction to academic and extracurricular life at Sangmyung University. The ceremony featured speeches from the university president, distinguished professors, and student representatives, offering words of encouragement and advice for the freshmen. Various performances, including a choir and dance team, added a festive atmosphere to the occasion. Departmental orientation sessions took place in respective locations, including the International Conference Room (College of Humanities and Social Sciences), Room 401 of the Business and Economics Building (College of Business), Daeshin Hall (College of Business Administration), and the Sports Center (College of Arts and Physical Education). 그림 2 College of Humanities and Social Sciences Orientation Senior students, who volunteered as Teaching Assistants (TAs) for the event, played a crucial role in guiding the new students. One TA remarked, "Although it was a bit tiring to arrive at school early in the morning, I am happy to help the freshmen in any way I can." Their assistance proved invaluable, especially for students unfamiliar with the campus layout. A freshman shared their experience, saying, "I didn't know where to go, but a senior from another department kindly helped me find my way. Since the basketball department is located at the Cheonan Campus, students from the Seoul campus and those not interested in sports may not be aware of it. In this article, I will take a look at the proud Sangmyung University basketball team, its players, and their triumph in the 2025 Stove League. In 1996, following Sangmyung University's transition to a coeducational institution, the university aimed to create a dynamic campus environment and enhance its reputation by establishing a basketball team. As a result, the men's basketball team was officially founded on February 26, 2009. Remarkably, just one year after its founding, the team was promoted to the first division in 2010, consistently demonstrating strong performances ever since Currently, in 2025, Sangmyung University Basketball Department is composed of 10 players, including Jun-hwan Choi, Dong-myung Hong, Jung-woo Song, In-seop Park, Jung-woo Wi, Jung-hwan Choi, Chan-young Kim, Min-kuk Kim, Young-ki Han, and Yong-jun Yoon. On February 5, at the 2025 Korea University Basketball Federation Stove League, Sangmyung University triumphed over Sungkyunkwan University. At the beginning of the game, Sungkyunkwan University played with high intensity, successfully made a three-point shot and took control of the game. However, the Sangmyung University team took the lead in the game with skillful play and defeated Sungkyunkwan University aided by three-point shots from Dong-myung Hong. After the game, Sangmyung University manager Seung-jin Go said, "Since it was our first game, the players seemed somewhat nervous, so the results of our training were not fully reflected. Nevertheless, I’m happy we won, and I appreciate the players for their hard work." Additionally, Dong-myung Hong, the captain of the basketball team, said, "I’m happy with the win. However, since our team is aiming for the playoffs this season, we won’t settle for this victory. We are focused on giving our best in every game." When asked what they were most looking forward to in the university league, Min-guk Kim said, "There are many skilled guards in the current university league, so I want to compete against as many players as possible." Young-ki Han said, "I want to play against various university players to assess my skill level." Yong-jun Yoon said, "Unlike in high school, we practice with professional teams. By practicing with pro teams, I want to learn from their strengths and make them my own." Sangmyung University basketball players made an impressive start to the 2025 game by winning their first game against Sungkyunkwan University. With the league set to begin in March, there's much anticipation surrounding how the team will perform in the coming matches. The Seoul campus ceremony took place in the morning, while the Cheonan campus ceremony was held in the afternoon. Graduation Ceremony Proceedings President’s Address At the Seoul campus, a total of 1,221 students received their degrees, including 989 bachelor's degree recipients, 106 master's degree recipients, 92 doctoral degree recipients, and 34 credit-based degree recipients. Also, at the Cheonan campus, 988 graduates received their bachelor's degrees in the gymnasium of the Gye-dang Hall. During this ceremony, several prestigious awards were given, including the Gye-dang Award to Go Yeong-ran from the Department of Management Engineering, the President’s Award to Lee Jeong-hyang from the Communication Design major, and the sm-IN Core Competency Excellence Award to Nam Taek-gwon from the Department of Human-Intelligent Robotics Engineering. The order of the ceremony included the opening speech, national anthem, academic report, presidential address, award presentations (for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees), congratulatory songs, diploma presentation, and the university anthem. President’s Address In his presidential address, Sangmyung University President Hong Seong-tae encouraged the graduates with the following words: “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the parents who have shown unwavering support and care for both Sangmyung University and our graduates. As they step into society, I hope their future will be filled with blessings. May they become the shining faces of Sangmyung University through growth that aligns with the changing times." Graduates' Remarks The graduates of Sangmyung University met during the ceremony, shared their thoughts and expressed their excitement for the new beginning ahead. A graduate from the Department of Nursing, A, said, “It didn’t feel real that I was graduating, but after receiving my degree today, it finally hit me. I could never have made it this far without the help of my professors and peers. I’ll continue to work hard to become a good nurse based on the experiences I gained here.” B, a graduate from the Department of Film and Video, shared, “During my university years, I learned so much while planning and shooting numerous projects. This recognition was awarded for the university's contributions to promoting youth employment. On this day, Kwon Tae-sung, head of the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office, presented the certificate of commendation to Kwon Ji-eun, head of the University Job Center at Sangmyung University. Reason for Award Sangmyung University conducted 37,160 career and employment consultations annually through the collaboration between professors and consultants at the University Job Plus Center. Additionally, through specialized programs linked to the university’s focused areas, a total of 9,940 individuals have completed the programs, contributing to an improvement in employment rates among the university’s students. Furthermore, through collaborations with local governments and affiliated organizations, including the Seoul Employment Center, the university has strengthened career and employment support for local youth, thereby enhancing their employment capabilities. Since its pilot program in 2015, Sangmyung University has been planning and operating various initiatives that align with government youth employment policies, improving the career development system for youth and achieving tangible results in employment support. University Job Plus Center The University Job Plus Center was established to help students resolve their career and employment concerns. The center is located in Room 201 of the Student Union at the Seoul campus and in Room 101 of Hanuri Hall at the Cheonan campus. The center offers one-on-one career and employment counseling from professional consultants and operates customized programs reflecting current employment market trends. It also supports the employment process through job matching, and provides practical experience and internship programs. In addition, the center actively engages in government and local government-linked youth employment support programs and provides essential career guidance through regional specialized programs. One of the center’s key programs is the ‘SM Job Fair,’ a career fair where current employees from various industries and job fields, including Sangmyung University alumni, participate in one-on-one consultations to assist students with their job preparations. Another notable program is the ICT certification program, which helps students obtain necessary computer skills, such as Excel, GTQ Photoshop/Illustrator, and computer accounting. The ‘SM Interview JET’ allows students to practice various types of interviews, including personality, debate, PT, and job-specific interviews, in a role-playing format with current hiring professionals. Additionally, the center offers ‘field-related job training programs,’ where companies and professionals provide training in various fields such as marketing, sales management, MD, broadcasting, and entertainment business. Other programs include the ‘SM-ACE Education Unit Link Program,’ which provides career and employment seminars, consultations, and job insights linked with academic courses; the ‘SM Resume JET,’ where students work in small groups with external consultants to complete their resumes; and the ‘SM Job Camp,’ which helps job seekers through resume consulting, personality, debate, and PT mock interviews over two days. Lastly, the center provides ‘SM Essential Job Training Programs’ in industries such as batteries, semiconductors, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical biotechnology, offering essential job-related training for fields like process, quality control, and sales. Students’ Thoughts on ‘Aboha’ What do Sangmyung University students think about ‘Aboha’? To find out, we conducted interviews with them. A third-year student, A, said, "I've never heard of the term ‘Aboha’ before, but I think I'm already practicing it. After school, I cook my favorite meals, and even though it may seem like a small thing, it makes me feel fulfilled and happy." A second-year student, B, shared, "I enjoy decorating my diary and writing down small but meaningful moments from my daily life." This was their own way of practicing Aboha. This award acknowledges Sangmyung University’s contribution to improving youth employment rates through close collaboration with the Ministry of Employment and Labor, Seoul City, and other related organizations, its proactive efforts in promoting various youth-tailored career and employment support programs, and its leading role in activating government youth employment policies. The organization that prepares posters promoting various career/job-related activities is Sangmyung University's University Employment Plus Center. The University Employment Plus Center is working hard not only at our school but also at 121 universities across the country to provide services. This is a service provided by the Ministry of Employment and Labor in the Republic of Korea for students without a high school diploma and as you can see from the service name, for university students. This service provides three large types of services. There is also a common service for all universities that mainly carry out the work done at our school's Employment Plus Center and 49 hub-type centers. The base-type center operates specialized programs that reflect industry and local characteristics such as bio-pharmaceutical marketing sales job education, artificial intelligence professional talent training courses, and job customization class management by industry. Kicker: SM NEWS Sangmyung University’s Successful Overseas Volunteer Activities for International Social Contribution in Winter 2024 By Ye-Dam Hwang, Reporter hwangyedam1108@naver.com The Sangmyung Social Impact Center(SSIC) did “Overseas volunteer activities for international social contribution in winter 2024” from December 22th in 2024 to January first in 2025 in Banteay Srei, Siem Reap, Cambodia. This volunteer activity program is selected for “University’s self-development overseas volunteer activity program in Winter 2024”, which is conducted by the Korean University Council for Social Service, and also this program is significant for overseas volunteer activities after COVID 19. The Sangmyung Social Impact Center which made this volunteer work program not only did this program successfully but also did some other volunteer activities, events, projects, and sponsorships that started with warm hearts. Contents and Meanings of the Volunteer Activities “Overseas volunteer activities for international social contribution in winter 2024” which was led by the Sangmyung Social Impact Center is meaningful for the selection by Korean University Council for Social Service and it is even more meaningful in that it is an overseas volunteer activity after the COVID-19 period, when opportunities were limited. For the purpose of value realization as a global university through international social contribution, the 20 students from Sangmyung University who participated in these volunteer activities performed local housing construction services, mango tree planting services, and “Wat Run Primary School” education services linked to their majors. Participants conducted various programs for local children using their major knowledge such as Korean, English, food, art, physical education, and health. Other Activities of the Sangmyung Social Impact Center Not only these overseas volunteer services, the Sangmyung Social Impact Center also has been engaged in many various volunteer works and projects. Recently, the center conducted the program named “To culture and arts with local community” which is meaningful for reinforcement of social magnanimity through offering art education which was aimed at local residents and underprivileged youth and for Sangmyung University students’ growth of level of contribution to local cultural arts. Aside from these, the center drew attention by sharing volunteer work with Cheonan City Welfare Foundation for the disabled’s welfare facility as part of a community contribution program for university innovation support projects. In addition, with the volunteer group at Sangmyung University Cheonan Campus, the SSIC conducted volunteer work to help rural workers in Gongju. These are not all, and the SSIC has been engaged in a variety of beneficial and meaningful activities. About these overseas volunteer activities, Sangmyung Social Impact Center officials said “We have made efforts to be practical help to Siem Reap of Cambodia, and I hope the students who participated in these volunteer activities can see international society with a broader perspective through this experience.” In this kind of conclusion, it is important to know our school’s winter international social contribution overseas volunteer activities for the 2024 school year have concluded successfully, and this is meaningful for the selection as “University’s self-development overseas volunteer activity program in Winter 2024” and for that it is an overseas volunteer program that resumed after COVID-19. This presents a valuable opportunity to explore different fields before making a decision and to engage in meaningful conversations with professors in those disciplines. Although this event is held annually, many students remain unaware of it or do not take full advantage of the opportunity. Why not seize this chance to participate and discover what each major has to offer? Experience Various Majors The Major Exploration Fair, held this October at Sangmyung University’s Seoul and Cheonan campuses, aimed to support students interested in specialized or multi-major tracks by enhancing adaptability and retention rates. The event welcomed prospective freshmen, parents, and entrance exam guidance teachers, providing them with campus tours and detailed explanations about the entrance process. By gathering feedback from attendees, the fair also sought to better understand the demand for information on university programs and admission criteria, allowing the university to better meet prospective students' needs. Program Introduction The fair offered valuable opportunities for prospective students, freshmen, and seniors alike. Each major’s booth provided consultations led by professors and current students, while QR codes at each booth allowed attendees to access information, confirm their participation, and receive souvenirs. In the integrated major promotion zone, each department’s materials were displayed on banners, and major introduction videos played on large screens. Attendees could also receive career counseling from professional advisors, including guidance on career paths after graduation. At the government-supported education business booth, visitors could learn about various major systems, including curricula for interdisciplinary programs. Interview with Participants 1. Hello, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today. To start, could you please introduce yourself? Nice to meet you. I'm Yu-min, a freshman majoring in intellectual property. 2. I heard that you participated in the 2024 Major Exploration Fair. Why did you participate? I decided to participate because I’m considering a double major and wanted some guidance. As a freshman, there was still a lot I didn’t know, but this opportunity allowed me to reconsider the major I'm studying in my department. By consulting on the curriculum of the department I’m interested in, I was able to receive valuable support in defining my career path. 3. Would you be interested in participating again? Of course. I would recommend it to others. For freshmen, it’s a great opportunity to think about and plan how to spend the remaining semesters. Even for upperclassmen, the advantage is being able to ask professors directly, which helps in setting more specific goals. 4. Lastly, what areas do you think could be improved? Attractive promotions that can grab students' attention are necessary. Since there are often high-ranking individuals, like professors, present during visits, I think it would be helpful to have more students available who can create a friendly and approachable environment, making it easier for others to ask questions. To graduate, students must choose from multiple majors, minors, or advanced majors.
